10am Panel: Manifesto for a Literary Brazil The Instituto C&A, Casa Azul, the Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil (FNLIJ), the Instituto Ecofuturo and the Centro de Cultura Luiz Freire (CCLF) are sponsoring a discussion about the importance of literature, and of policies that encourage reading. Writer Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós will read the “Manifesto for a Literary Brazil”.

1:30pm Literary workshop: Poetry As part of the homage to Manuel Bandeira, the literary workshop will be devoted to poetry, and will be directed by Brazilian poet Carlito Azevedo, author of Sublunar. The workshop is open only to applicants chosen through the selection process that closed in June.

3:30pm Bandeira on the radio Focusing on Manuel Bandeira for its first outing, the digital radio programme Lettera Libris will feature dramatised poetry readings, films about the poet and his hometown of Recife, as well as critics and writers recording podcasts about Bandeira’s work.

4:30pm Comedy: David Foenkinos Described by Le Monde as a “depressive comedian”, Parisian David Foenkinos uses humour to discuss serious topics. Aged 34, he is the author of The Erotic Potential of My Wife (2005) and In Case of Happiness (2007). His latest book, Qui se souvient de David Foenkinos?, was awarded the 2007 Jean Giono prize.

6:30pm Film and Philosophy with Ollivier Pourriol French writer Ollivier Pourriol, author of Cinéphilo, suggests learning philosophy through popular films. At FLIP, he will discuss Spinoza’s theory of man’s desire for eternity, as illustrated in films such as Blade Runner, X-Men and Matrix.
