The masters and the slaves: a timeless book

Fernando Henrique Cardoso

Luiz Felipe de Alencastro

Sociologist and former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, one of the main interpreters of Gilberto Freyre’s work, is the author of the preface to the latest edition of The Masters and the Slaves. In the inaugural lecture for Flip 2010 he will discuss the contradictions that lie at the root of this seminal work in Brazilian intellectual history. Responding to the lecture will be historian Luiz Felipe de Alencastro, one of the greatest specialists on slavery in Brazil, who will emphasise Freyre’s understanding of black culture.
