Plantu
Plantu was born in Paris in 1951. A prize-winning cartoonist, he began his long-standing daily contributions to Le Monde in 1972, when the newspaper published his cartoon about the Vietnam War. Ever an iconoclast and focused on political satire, Plantu was, along with Kofi Annan, one of the founders of the NGO Cartooning for Peace, created in 2006 to promote ‘a better understanding and mutual respect between people of different cultures and creeds’, making use of cartoons as a universal language. The organisation also provides protection and legal assistance to cartoonists working in hostile environments.
